Visitor From the EastWhen Germany was split in 1949, the railways in East Germany retained the name of the old state Railway (Deutsche Reichsbahn, or DR).
Likewise, the old sleeping and dining car company Mitropa remained in operation under that name, while those operations in the western zone took on a new identity.
Mitropa continued to operate as a separate entity until 1994, when it was re-joined with DSG, the old West German sleeping car company. The new company took the name Mitropa AG.
This is a Mitropa car on a cross-border train at Altona Station in Hamburg, Germany. The lettering above the windows identifies it as a salon-restaurant in German, Italian and Russian.
