Reliving the "City of Portland"

This Union Pacific excursion is departing Portland Union Station for a weekend round trip to Bend, Ore., but in your mind's eye it could be the famed "City of Portland" highballing for its run to Chicago.

E9s #951, 963 and 949 lead a train of classic UP passenger cars. The consist had come into Portland with 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" #3985.

The "City of Portland" was Union Pacific's first long-distance streamliner, beginning with the M-10001 in 1935 and ending with the coming of Amtrak in 1971.
