When the shop crews at the Rio Grande Southern put their heads together, this is what came out -- one of the Colorado narrow gauge line's famed "Galloping Goose" railcars.

Motor #2 was a combination of automobile and truck on a pair of wheelsets, and mainly hauled mail and express for the railroad. The RGS built seven of the distinctive cars, and they remained in service until the railroad shut down in 1952.

Six of the original "Geese" survive: #2, #6 and #7 are in the collection of the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden; #3 is at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif.; #4 is preserved at Ridgway, Colo.; and #5 operates on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
