Monument To An Idea

For nearly 35 years, the well-known "Monument To An Idea" memorialized the location in Glenwood Canyon, Colo. where, in 1944, EMD executive Cyrus Osborn conceived the modern dome car.

Osborn's concept of a passenger car with all-round viewing first took shape with Burlington's "Silver Dome" rebuild in 1945, the first of an eventual 236 domes built new or converted from existing rolling stock.

When the construction of Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon threatened the monument site, it was successfully moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, where it is seen by thousands each year.
