NORFOLK & WESTERN 0-8-0N&W Class S-1 0-8-0 283 (ex C&O 283, Baldwin 1948) is the Roanoke station switcher on May 5, 1957. The N&W's Hotel Roanoke is in the background. The superb hotel remains an excellent choice for a visit to see the active NS in Roanoke and the O.W. Link and RR museums. I was here in 1957 as part of a three-day weekend trip from Washington to Norton, VA sponsored by the Southern Region of the NRHS. Two nights at the Hotel Roanoke and about 850 miles of travel over the N&W and Southern cost $37.50.
