Ghost Railroad (Schenectady and Margaretville) in the Catskills, Prattsville, NYThis view was taken from the shoulder of Route 23 at the eastern edge of Prattsville, NY and looks south. The large mound of earth in the center of the shot that extends back into the hillside and curves to the right was to be a bridge abutment for the Schenectady and Margaretville Railroad. A massive horseshoe-shaped trestle would have carried the railroad across the valley. The Schenectady and Margaretville was chartered in the early 1900's to run from Wilkes Barre, PA to Schenectady, NY as a trunk line for coal. The line would have utilized portions of the O&W, the Delaware and Eastern, and the U&D as far as Grand Gorge, NY, before striking out on its own. Construction began in 1906 and halted in 1907 when funding ran out. Not a single rail or tie was ever placed. Photo taken on Saturday, 02/20/2010.
