NORTHUP AVENUE YARD

New Haven westbound from the Branch Avenue bridge in Providence, RI. The large hump yard was named after a short street that ran at a right angle to the train -- it once crossed under the tracks before the yard was expanded and the Northup Ave. underpass filled-in. The tracks on the right are the westbound departure and classification tracks. The train is on the westbound two track main -- the eastbound main line tracks are on the other side of the yard to provide an efficient entry and exit not requiring freght trains to cross a mainline
