NEW HAVEN ALCO S-1 AT CHARLES STREET

S-1 0935 is on the turntable at the Charles Street roundhouse in Providence, RI. The inverted girders, which don't help photographers, permit a relatively shallow pit and were common on the New Haven. The 660 hp ALCO was built in 1941 -- the S-1's were the most numerous diesel switchers owned by the New Haven. The ALCO and FM in the background are on the tracks of the roundhouse which was in the process of being razed.

Photographed by Edward Ozog, May 20, 1956.

Railroad: New Haven.
