THE NEW HAVEN'S TURNTABLE AT CHARLES ST.

I do not recall the reason for this movement but the FM H16-44 and ALCO S-1 will both fit on the 95 foot turntable at the Charles Street roundhouse in Providence, RI. The roundhouse, now buried under route 146, was being razed around the time I shot this. It was built in the 1890's and was cramped and dark despite white walls because when the Charles St. grade crossing was eliminated most of the rear windows were blocked by retaining walls and expansion of the stalls was restricted. A new three stall addition next to the machine shop lasted until into the 1970's, however.
