BOSTON & MAINE ROUND THE MOUNTAINS EXCURSIONI had the pleasure on three occasions - Fall and Winter - to ride the popular excursion that ran though the Crawford Notch. It was called Round The Mountains because it ran from Boston to White River Junction, then up the Connecticut River to Wells River and Whitefield and then turned south to run through the Crawford Notch downgrade. It then proceeded to Dover and Boston. The train was heavy and the run down the notch grade was in a haze of brake shoe smoke. On one of the trips we had two Maine Central switchers piloting the B&M units to provide extra braking power. Going down wasn't necessarily easier than climbing the grade. I think I shot this around Whitefield, Vt.
