B&M EAST SOMERVILLE ROUNDHOUSE AND ASH PITS

P-2-c 4-6-2 3687 and a Mogul are being serviced at the ash pits at the Boston engine facility. The wooden platforms were used to clean fires and ash hoppers, wash engines and lubricate, Despite several visits I never got a close look at the ash handling but I know the underground tunnel that was used to move the ashes ran under quite a few tracks. I suspect it was a water system that moved the ashes but I don't even recall the hopper cars that would usually receive the ashes.
