Otis Elevating Railway at Palenville, NY

This view shows the base of the Otis Elevating Railway, which was abandoned in 1918. It was used to haul vacationers from the base station at Palenville, NY up to the world-famous Catskill Mountain House, which was located on top of the ridge (known as the Wall of Manitou). The railway was approximately 7000 feet long and climbed over 1600 feet to the top. Sharp-eyed viewers will spot the deck of a concrete bridge near the top and sandwiched between the two power lines. The bridge is actually quite substantial, being several hundred feet long and over 30 feet high. Photo taken on Saturday, 04/25/2009.
