Rio Grande Zephyr, Grand Junction, Colorado, August 1976

The Zephyr is serviced at the Grand Junction station stop. A trio of EMD F7 units on the westbound Rio Grande Zephyr gets an assist through the Rockies and the Western Slope from EMD GP40-2 3107. The D&RGW did not join Amtrak so was required to continue to run this train. Eventually Amtrak's California Zephyr shifted from its UP route through Wyoming to this more scenic route, and this train was discontinued.

Photographed by Dr. Richard Leonard, August, 1976.
Added to the photo archive by Dr. Richard Leonard, November 1, 2008.
Railroad: Denver & Rio Grande Western.
