Prime Mover Transplant

The Hobo Railroad determined that the block in Alco S-3 #1186 was in a porous condition. Here it rests on a flat car after removal while the prime mover from scrapped Maine Central Alco S-1 # 960 is being prepared to replace this block. This swap was done on Monday June 30 and is being buttoned up for use this season. The locomotive engine from the 960 was rebuilt by the Maine Central RR before scrapping long ago and has rested in a storage boxcar in Lincoln Yard ever since. #1186 is former B&M 1186, Otter Valley RR 1186, Wolfeboro RR 1186. Built in 1949 it was used around Boston and throughout the B&M system. For years it operated on the Wolfeboro RR when steam was not used. It was named the "Edward A Clark" in 1998 and dedicated to the late founder of the Hobo Railroad. It serves in active duty at the Lincoln, NH railroad. The Hobo / Winnipesaukee RR also operates MEC 958, 959 and has the cab to the 957 stored in the yard. Its 4th Alco is S1 #1008 from Portland Terminal Co.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

As I recall, the ALCO block castings were known for their "porousity" . In 1987 1186 generated a pinhole leak that got into the crankcase, causing a rail service shut-down until repaired, cleaned up and the oil replaced. Discovered by 9:00am, the engine was again in service for the then 3:00pm train .Note the size of the injector pump in the center. Plus this engine featured 4 valves per cylinder 'way back when.
