DL&W Tunnel at Manunka Chunk, NJ

This is the west portal of the DL&W Manunka Chunk Tunnel located just south of Delaware, NJ along Route 46. The tunnel was originally part of the Warren RR, before being absorbed into the Lackawanna. Service was downgraded severely in 1911 with the completion of the Lackawanna Cutoff (running from Port Morris, NJ to Slateford Junction, PA). The tunnel was single-tracked in 1948 (the eastbound track - i.e., the track going through the bore on the right - was removed) and the line was abandoned and torn up in 1970. The Pennsylvania Railroad's Bel-Del Division joined the Lackawanna at this location and the Pennsy actually had trackage rights on the Lackawanna as far as East Stroudsburg, PA.
