Southfield Ironworks Narrow Gauge RR, Southfields, NY

This view shows the remains of a narrow gauge railroad spanning a small stream at the Southfield Ironworks in Southfields, NY. The ironworks connected with the Erie RR via the Southfield Branch RR, which ran a total distance of one mile! The purpose of the narrow gauge railroad is unclear. An old map of the ironworks complex shows a coal shed on one side of the stream and a grist mill, stamping mill, and sawmill on the other. The narrow gauge railroad was possibly used to shuttle coal from the shed to the mills.
