O&W Concrete Overpass at Summitville, NY

This substantial overpass is located just north of Summitville, NY and is off of Minister Flats Road, which is off Route 209. The overpass is located along the grade from Summitville to Young's Gap (located just north of Liberty, NY). This part of the grade was especially severe as it climbed the infamous Red Hill - the site of several wrecks and runaways. Railfans standing here in the 1920's and 1930's could regularly expect to see pushers on the rear of heavy manifest freights struggling up Red Hill. Regrettably, the grade has been silent since 1957. Summitville seems like an odd choice to name a location that was at the BOTTOM of the grade. As a point of fact, Summitville got its name not from the railroad, but from the D&H Canal which also passed through Summitville at its highest elevation!
