O&W Road at Trout Brook, NYThis is O&W Road at Trout Brook, NY looking east. Trout Brook is just east of East Branch, NY. As its name implies, O&W Road was built on top of the right-of-way of the New York, Ontario, and Western RR. The steep path coming down the hillside is the original road that was used before the O&W was abandoned. This was a blind and dangerous crossing and was the scene of at least one fatal accident. William Helmer's classic book The Long Life and Slow Death of the O&W contains a shot of this exact location (and exact angle) showing what the area looked like when the O&W went through. Until very recently, there was an O&W whistle marker just west of this location to warn trains of this dangerous crossing. As of 03/15/08 (when this shot was taken), the whistle marker was gone - possibly the victim of an errant snowplow.
