Site of O&W South Yard at Cadosia, NY

This view looks east from Cadosia, NY on a spectacular autumn day at the height of fall color in the Catskills. The road to the left is "Old Route 17" while the divided highway on the right is the present Route 17 (soon to be Interstate 86). This was the site of the O&W's South Yard. Behind the photographer was the North Yard and the junction of where the Scranton Division joined the mainline from Oswego, NY. Up until the O&W's abandonment in 1957, cars were sorted for locations as diverse as New England, New York City, Scranton, Utica, and Oswego. The west portal of Hawk Mountain Tunnel was approximately one mile to the east and just out of view to the right. Both portals of Hawk Mountain Tunnel were completely buried by the construction of Route 17.
