Wreck of the Red Wing, Lowell Mass 1955 These 6 photos are of a set of 12 came to me via eBay and I didn’t know where the event took place. The following summary was provided by Dave Hutchinson: “What you have here is the wreck of the (eastbound) "Red Wing" at Lowell, Mass. Aug.23, 1955. The wreck occurred when a road freight was setting off in the yard down by the Concord River bridge. One of the bands of a tank car body snapped causing the tank body to swerve into the path of the oncoming #325 "Red Wing". #325's locomotives, 4228a-4228b, hit the tank and knocked it into the river and the consist piled up behind the derailed locomotives. Yard switcher 1123 just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught up in the mess.” Thanks to all for the info, the story behind the story always makes things more interesting. /DL
