Operation LifesaverOperation Lifesaver sitting at the yard in Waterville, Me. it's nice to see this unit around the more the better. Rail service is on the rise in Maine and with that more serious injuries and deaths have happend because some people either didn't believe there was a train coming or didn't care. A good example of this was a guy fishing in Belgrade a few years ago on a small bridge, it was known then and now as a local fishing "hot spot" this guy had fished there for many of years knowing 1. this was an active railroad 2. he was trespassing and risking his life, along with other people he brought there. One day a local frieght train went by at about 45-50 mph the draft from the train pulled him in from the edge of the bridge and sucked him in between two boxcars. Despite quick medical attention he died. People take for granted that if you can't hear a train or see one then there is none, well take it from experience, I use to race a Amtrak in North Dakota from highway 2 to downtown Grand Forks. One time I ran out of gas and coasted across an ungated crossing on a dirt road, I just made it as the passenger train flew by at about 60+ mph. That was a long time ago. I respect trains a lot now. Be safe and have a fun time taking photos of trains, but please don't race one or stand on the tracks. Nokia 5130 Camera phone.
