Fastening with fireThis is the switch in CP83 on the CSX mainline at Palmer, MA, with the NECR main crossing in the background underneath NECR 3848. I got there as the CSX track crew was finishing up replacing an insulated rail joint, which they apparently do by cutting in a new pre-made section of rail with the insulated joint in the middle. The kneeling gentleman has just used the flare in his right hand to light whatever it is that's burning to weld a copper jumper wire across one of the two new joints. The new insulated joint is just visible behind him, and the other new joint that's already been jumpered is to the left of that. According to other railfans who had arrived earlier than I, the whole process took only a couple hours. Impressive!
