Southbound on the Flyer -- March 1948

Jay Hogan has posted some great pictures of the bike trail that now occupies the former Rutland right of way across Lake Champlain between Burlington and South Hero Island. By way of comparison, here's a "golden oldie" taken from the rear of the Green Mountain Flyer in March 1948. South Hero Island is in the background, and smoke from the 4-6-2 locomotive still hangs in the air.

Photographed by Jim Wright, March, 1948.
Added to the photo archive by Jim Wright, July 23, 2007.
Railroad: Rutland.

Only a single crossarm here. Only telegraph and telephone wires. Probably not even Western Union wires
