The Cavalry Moves By TrainWhen the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division deployed to Homestead, Fla. for Hurricane Andrew relief operations in August 1992, I was serving as the Public Affairs Officer for the division's Aviation Brigade. For this operation, most of its vehicles moved to and from the division's Fort Drum, N.Y. home post by rail.
These are HMMWVs of Troop A, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry, lined up for loading at the Florida East Coast intermodal yard in Hialeah, as FEC GP9 #672 moves autoracks in the background. Just three months later, this same unit loaded out again for rail transport to the Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne, N.J., when the 10th Mountain deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia for Operation Restore Hope.
