Chasing a Ghost...Railroad (4)

Vintage photo of the station at Tariffville. The CNE main is in front of the station, running from east (right) to west (left). The track curving off in the right side of the picture is the Agawam branch, which opened in 1902, and joined the Boston & Albany at Agawam Junction, about 4 miles west of Springfield, with trackage rights over the B&A into Springfield.

The caption is incorrect. Indeed the main is on this side IF you consider the straight route by the depot as the main. However, Agawam Jct. is to the left, Hartford is to the upper right and Cambell Hall is to the lower right. This is verified by valuation map. From a freight standpoint this makes sense because th CNE was trying to reach interchange with the B&A in order to get around the New Haven.
