Trestle over the Taunton River, Dean Street Branch, Taunton, Massachusetts

One of three trestles that crosses the Taunton River along this branch. This trestle is located behind Prospect Street and the photograph was taken from a nearby house. When the Bay Colony took over operations, they upgraded all three trestles with a steel infrastructure, but saved the existing center girder span (the span here is out of sight behind the vegetation on the right) on two of them. One trestle does not cross the navigable channel of the river, and therefore, was not constructed with a girder span.

The smell of rust and creosote always hung heavy around these wooden trestles, especially on hot, humid summer days. Taken with a 110 film camera.

Photographed by Karl M. Dietzler, July, 1982.
