Across a Scenic IslandIt's hard to believe, as you stand on the recently-abandoned Newburyport Branch tracks in Lynnfield, Mass., that you're in the suburbs just a few miles from Boston. Here, the tracks cross one of many small islands in Reedy Meadow, a protected wetland area teeming with birds, turtles, foxes, and deer. In the 1980s a moose even wandered down the line from northern Massachusetts and led police on a midday chase around the center of town. The towns of Lynnfield and Wakefield want to turn the line into a recreational trail.
