All roads led to Whitefield

Note the past tense. At one time, this Whitefield NH track once carried passengers to and from Crawford Notch. Here, the passengers could enjoy a night at the Mountain View Grand Hotel (which just reopened, fully restored.) The tracks you see here connect with the Maine Central's Mountain Division at Mount Washington Regional Airport. In a recent interview with Whitefield's assistant town clerk, I learned the airport had just expanded and was hoping to attact small jets. Industry at the airfield was growing, while residents and tourists were eager to see a return of rail frieght take the burden off of heavy trucking in the area. Now: imagine being able to take a charter flight into Whitefield's airport and get on a passenger train to the center of town, to Bretton Woods or Attitash for skiing, or Vermont for a few hours?
