MEC Crowleys Jct. Switchman's Log for XMAS Day 1926

My interest in this location on the MEC stems from a pair of log books that came up on Ebay a year ago. The earliest one covers from Dec 25th 1926 thru mid March of 1927. This page shows the eastbound traffic on that day. It lists the Train No., Engine, Date etc. The size of the bound book closed is about 5 x 16 inches. Just missing on the right hand side of the picture is the engineer's name. During the 5 or 6 months this logbook covers Locomotive #199 was taken out of service for a week or two in the shop or for other duty. The crew didn't rest however. The conductor Mr. Goss and his sidekick in the cab W.Clark ran 6 trains (3 each way) a day, 5 days a week and one train each way every Sunday for the entire period. There were no breaks except for the layover in Brunswick on Sunday. From the time Train #138 left Lewiston at 6:45 AM until Train #145 got back to Lewiston at 5:43 PM they were busy. That's nearly 12 hours a day 6 days a week plus the Train #745 and #742 on Sunday. Must have been an interesting life. I suppose there were mad dashes home between runs to do this or that, but I expect 'Ma' had to weed the garden and hoe the beans along with everything else. On top of this consider that most of these guys considered themselves lucky, they had a good job with good pay. /DL
