Drivers

Those drivers were built for power, not speed, on the New Haven's Mikados. They came from Alco in Schenectady. "New Haven Power," Jack Swanberg, [New York:Wayner Publications, 1988] states the first 23 (3000-3022) Mikados were slightly smaller than a USRA Light Mikado. The next two (3023, 3024) were built with experimental McClellan boilers. All 25 engines were classified as J-1s. They were delivered in March and April 1916, and ran on 180 pounds-per-square-inch steam pressure.
Eight more Mikes, similar in size and weight to USRA Heavy Mikados were delivered next, and classed as J-2s. They were delivered in May 1916, and operated with 200 ppsi in the boilers.
All the engines rolled on 63-inch drivers.
