It was around 1948 when I discovered the New York, New Haven & Hartford's East Side Tunnel in Providence, R.I. I was 10 years old. The bore was about one mile long, and was under the hill from Benefit Street near downtown to Gano Street, near the Seekonk River. Four years later, I had my first camera - a Kodak Brownie. This early effort captured the daily oil drag with an Alco RS-3 tugging after a day's work. It was around 4:30 p.m.
The train departed Northup Avenue Classification Yard in the morning with empties, went through the hole, across Seekonk River drawbridge, made a right turn on a wye in East Providence and went to the Gulf Oil station on the line to Bristol. The engine number appears to be 528, but I cannot say with certainty. Ca. 1952
