A mangled Conrail handrail in the gravel...

Posts to the BayColony list indicate that as many as two major wrecks occured at Medfield Jct. over the last several decades. Though the details of these wrecks are somewhat cloudy, consensus on one of them is that an empty hopper was set loose by vandals from the passing siding at Medfield Jct., causing it to roll north and out onto the then-Conrail mainline. The next train south on the Framingham Secondary hit the car head-on, resulting in a wreck. Though accident reports are unclear, I did find this mangled Conrail-blue locomotive handrail in the gravel below the west side of the mainline, along with a mangled car end-platform, airhose, and some sort of locomotive air tank (in rusted Conrail blue paint). Long story short, Conrail removed the north switch of the siding at Medfield Jct. after this incident.
