Empty Gypsum Train at Windsor4 MLW RS-23s are about to depart the small yard in Windsor, NS. Until 1994, CP owned the Dominion Atlantic Railway, and favoured SW1200RSs for the gypsum trains (and all other freights). When Iron Roads purchased the property, the SW1200s weren't part of the deal, and W&H got about a dozen ex-CP RS-23s, in various states of repair.
These light roadswitchers, with only 1000 HP, but full size trucks and traction motors, have been a good choice for the slow, heavy work they are required to do. Rumours of impending GP38s keep surfacing, but so far, the road is 100% MLW.
In June of 2004, the W&H leased a GMD-1 from CN to augment the fleet of MLWs.
Update: The W&H leased four GP9s from Cando Contracting in 2005, and in April of 2006, the RS-23s were sold, and scrapping started in Windsor.
