Canadian Pacific Steam Engine 1278

This photo is at Steamtown in Bellows Falls (Rockingham) Vermont. At one point, the number was changed to 127, then back to 1278. This locomotive was sold to the Gettysburg Railroad. During operation, this locomotive suffered a crown sheet failure. Thankfully, the boiler was made with safety plugs that blew, which flushed the water from the boiler into the firebox, saving the locomotive and the lives of its crew and passengers. The engineer and fireman were scalded and burned, but survived. 1278 was sold to the Ohio Central, where she awaits rebuild. This engine resembles the 1246 a little that is currently residing in Essex, CT.
