Maine Central F3 #684 and 2-8-0 # 518 collision, October 1949

I bought this set of 4 pictures on Ebay a few months ago. The media consisted of 4 black & white prints about 2 x 3 inches. Apparently they were contact prints as a high rez scan (4mb file size) brings out a lot of detail. No notation as to who the photographer was or where the pictures were taken. Anyone know where they were taken? I'd be very interested in knowing.

The notation on the back of the print:
"Eng 684 don't look so bad but understand it is uncertain if she can be repaired"

Indeed, it appears as though 684 was repaired and was in service well into the 50s. /DL

Unknown photographer October 27, 1949.

Railroad: Maine Central.
