S-Motor 4715, glistening like a black diamond with its recent paint job, sits at Harmon Yard for all to admire. The 1905 era motors were designed by the General Electric Company for simplicity, speed, power, ruggedness, dependability, and to replace steam engines in the network of tunnels approaching the new Grand Central Station. They drew juice from third rail as well as via their small pantographs for Grand Central Tunnel operation. In 1913, electrification was brought as far north from Grand Central as the Harmon Shops, now called Croton-Harmon, by the New York Central Railroad. The shops are now used by Metro-North equipment.
