NS Sandusky Yard - NS #9954 [D9-40CW]; Sandusky, OHNS Sandusky Yard - MP 106
West Bogart Road grade crossing
Sandusky, OH
After having been in the Port Clinton / Sandusky, Ohio area on a business and leisure trip, and on our way home east on Ohio SR2, we passed over the yard and saw some locomotives operating. So, we took a little detour and paid a visit to the Norfolk Southern Sandusky Intermodal Yard.
We bumped into several units near the West Bogart Road crossing, including this pair: #9954 [D9-40CW] unpainted, and #9255 [D9-40CW] in Operation Lifesaver scheme.
Unpainted locomotives have always fascinated me, and the engineer of #9954 related to me that due to the drastic increase of rail traffic in recent months, Norfolk Southern couldn't get their new order of locomotives painted fast enough, so NS just stenciled their name and locomotive number on cab, and off to work they went.
To lend credence to this engineers explanation, I counted no less than half a dozen of these unpainted Norfolk Southern units in consists transiting the Port Clinton / Sandusky area during my four day stay in the area.
This pair had just been tied onto an eastbound train of roadrailers, TOFC's and intermodals.
