Pennsylvania Coal Company Gravity Railroad at Wangum Falls, PA

This dirt road (known as Wangum Falls Road) was built on the right-of-way of the Pennsylvania Coal Company (PCC) Gravity Railroad. The bridge spans Wangum Falls, which are located just northwest of Hawley, PA. The gravity railroad was in use until 1885 and the PCC was absorbed by the Erie Railroad in 1901. Those fortunate enough to have a copy of Manville Wakefield's classic book Coal Boats to Tidewater may recognize this location, as the book contains a photograph showing a "train" of coal cars rolling over a wooden bridge at this location.
