Photo of Gardner Ma
Gardner Ma

Here is a shot to compare with Bruce McDonald’s shot of Gardner in 1984. This picture was taken in 1968 by George C. Corey when you could roam around railroad property without a care. George was on top of a boxcar in the Gardner yard to capture this image. Atlantic Richfield gas station behind the train is Family Pharmacy in Bruce’s shot. Rt.2 was in the process of being constructed at this time eliminating the Elm St. bridge that would have been over the last passenger car.

Photographed by George C. Corey, June 8, 1968.

Tying to make this picture fit with the assigned date is a little problematic. I think the 4268 was "blue dipped" around 1967. The consist is also interesting with what I can best guess as New Haven Pullmans. The tower and the Esso station would be right for 1962. The Ford Fairlaine model (next to the old car) seems to be right for the year (but I am not a car expert).

Ron I found the correct date for this photo. Great detective work on your part. Thanks, I try to be as accurate as possible.

Very interesting photo! What train would this have been? Was it a special excursion or fan trip?
