ex-NYC R-2 Motor at CSS&SB's Michigan City shops

Sometime in the winter of 1955, my father captured this photo of ex-NYC R-2 motor #314 at the South Shore's Michigan City shops. This unit was one of 10 of the Central's 42 R-2s acquired by the South Shore. Seven units, including #314, were prepped for operation by converting from 660V DC 3rd rail to 1500V DC overhead catenary using NYC P-motor components. Three units were cannibalized for parts. #314 was placed into service by the end of 1955 sporting CSS&SB's orange with red band livery.

Photographed by John Barlow, 1955.
