"Hibernation Station" in MeredithThe Lochmere to Lincoln segment of the White Mountain Branch yields to snowmobile traffic in winter. with plenty of snow pack to enjoy.
This hibernating train set was left behind for the winter at Meredith Station, base of operations for the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad. The rest of the equipment was moved north to Lincoln at the end of October 2022.
These days, P&L 302, the former Rock Island and New England Southern chopped nose GP7, serves faithfully as reserve back-up power, and at times during the season, a secondary backup option.
This hibernating trainset includes two former B&M/MBTA RDC's, a caboose which also serves as a shoving platform, and this modified former Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western MU car that last worked for New Jersey Transit up until the mid 1980's.
If you want to learn more about the Lackawanna MU Cars, there was a great story about their final days operating on New Jersey Transit in the January 2023 issue of Railfan & Railroad Magazine, probably still hanging around bookstores and newsstands.
