Photo of Ashland & Ice Cream
Ashland & Ice Cream

In the latter part of June, the Winnipesaukee Scenic made their annual equipment move south from Lincoln to their base of operations in Meredith. 2 former Reading and MBTA non powered Budd RDC-1's, and a former DL&W Pullman MU coach made the southbound trip being pulled by PLLX 1012, their SW1000 of BN origin. These four pieces, plus another DL&W coach and an ex CN caboose make up the consist for their daily Meredith, Weirs Beach, and Lakeport trains.

This RDC-1 #9159, pictured, is known far and wide as the "Ice Cream Parlor" Car. The coach seats were removed, and replaced with tables and chairs. In a pre-Covid19 world, sandwiches, snacks, drinks, and of course ice cream were served out of this car to their guests.

#9159 looks like it could have picked up and dropped off passengers at the perfectly restored Ashland Train Station. 'Back in the day', but I am sure many of the B&M Budd RDC-1s versions did. This historical train station was built 151 years ago by the Boston, Concord, and Montreal railroad.

The Hobo & Winnipesaukee Scenic uses several former MBTA Budd RDC-1's that have both B&M and Reading heritage. Come take a ride !
