P&L 1012 along side US Route 3Even on a drab late October day, an unscheduled train passing along side Route 3, south of Downtown Plymouth looks great. This was the big move, the PLL Crew was bringing most of the equipment north from Meredith Yard to Lincoln.
P&L 1012 (SW1000) was on the point, while P&L 1590 (SW1001) was operating on the end, used as a helper to get the train up and over Ashland Summit. There was one extra car in this lineup as a privately owned RDC-1 (NH 41 / PLLX 41) was brought up to the Lincoln Shops for winter work after being left in Meredith Yard during the fall season.
This route is regularly used for the Winnipesaukee Scenic's Fall Foliage Specials that run in September and October, going from Meredith to Plymouth and back, which includes a delicious Common Man Inn feast on the Plymouth end, and a stop at Historic Ashland Station on the return trip.
Most of this equipment with the two locos, the Alpine (Lackawana) dining car, Budd RDC-1's 9159 (Ice Cream Parlor Car), 9151 were all used for the Hobo Railroad's Santa Express and Journey to the North Pole Trains which ran from after Thanksgiving to almost Christmas. The Deer Park Dining car was brought up as a spare.
