The abutment in the foreground was for the trestle over Lake Creek that carried the tracks of the narrow-gauge Catskill and Tannersville (C&T) Railroad. The high berm in the background was the approach for the Ulster and Delaware (U&D) trestle over the same stream. Competition for the lucrative tourist business was so fierce in the late 1800's and early 1900's that the C&T and the U&D literally ran side-by-side from Kaaterskill to Tannersville, NY. The opening of western vacation destinations (Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, etc.) and the invention of the automobile killed the tourist trade to the Catskills. The C&T quit in 1918 and the U&D branch to Kaaterskill was abandoned in 1940. The photo was taken on Saturday, 10/02/1010.
