Otis Elevating Railway at Palenville, NYThis view is from the Summit of the Otis Elevating Railway and looks down towards the base station at Palenville, NY. The Hudson River and the Berkshire Mountains can be seen in the distance. The Power Station for the Otis was located at the summit and was used to operate the cable system. There are three superb books about the Otis Elevating Railway for those wanting to learn more about this fascinating railroad: 1) Rip Van Winkle Railroads, by William Helmer; 2) Light Rail and Short Ties to the Notch, by John Ham and Robert Bucenec; and 3) The Ulster and Delaware, by Gerald Best.
