The concrete abutment just to the left of the highway bridge spanning the Beaver Kill River belonged to the Delaware & Northern RR. This diminutive road wandered north from East Branch, NY for approximately 40 miles before joining the Ulster and Delaware RR at Arkville, NY. This view is looking south into East Branch. Upon crossing the Beaver Kill, the D&N turned sharply right (i.e., west) and connected with the NYO&W RR. The O&W ran from left to right as viewed in this shot. The D&N began life in the early 1900's as the Delaware and Eastern RR and was to be part of a major trunk line for coal running from Scranton, PA to Schenectady, NY. Funding ran out and the Delaware and EASTERN was reorganized as the Delaware and NORTHERN in 1911. The road somehow limped along for 30 years, surviving mostly on bluestone (used for sidewalks), lumber, and agricultural products, before being mercifully abandoned in the early 1940's.
