Weatherbeaten Sentry

Guarding the Shoreline and and its junction with the former Old Colony routes to Framingham and Taunton is this venerable relic. It has been a long time since the New Haven has used any paint for the clapboards and the only likely improvement the Penn Central has supplied is the "Mansfield" sign. A nearby stone masonry building once housing a foundry dates back to the early days of the Boston and Providence.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

How I remember it well! SS 169 at Mansfield Mass. My home town for many years. Five years after you took this photo, I began waiting on that very same inbound platform to ride the commuter trains to Back Bay and South Station to college and my first engineering job!

Thanks for posting this fine and historic photo!
