CSRX 216 by Milepost P89 at Bretton Woods (Carroll) NHHere was the consist for the Conway Scenic's Winter Mountaineer train, heading east on the return trip to North Conway Station on the final day of February. This season's winter trains go out to Fabyan's Station offering riders the perfect view of Mount Washington behind the Mount Washington Grand Hotel when the skies are blue.. (No blue skies for this picture taker!)
An engine on each end eliminates the need to handle switches and run around the train cars. CSRX 216 is 2500 hp GP35 built for Norfolk & Western in March of 1965. It was the last in an order of GP35s built for N&W. CSRX 1751 was built in Sept 1956 for the Chesapeake & Ohio. Both engines faced east.
This was by milepost P89.. The mile marker is barely visible in the snow to the left of the telephone pole. 89 Miles from Portland just to the east of Fabyan's and the bridge over the Ammonussuc River that flows west into the Connecticut River.
There was some serious deep snow on the other side of that guard rail.
