M-2s were the mainstay of the New Haven Line commuter service from the 1970s until the 2000s, when they were retired and replaced with the present M-8s. Two were donated to Danbury Railway Museum after retirement... the majority of the rest of the 240 car fleet were scrapped.

For the 2025 Metro North Open House at New Haven, Danbury Railway Museum contributed and FL-9 and its two M-2s for displaying during the event.
