Photo of Back Cove Trestle
Back Cove Trestle

In the 1980s, the Back Cove Trestle (seen here) burned, severing the connection on the Grand Trunk Railway into downtown Portland. In 1989, the line was sold to Emons Holdings and became the \"St Lawrence & Atlantic\". They operated to the north side of the trestle, but never had access to Portland proper because of the trestle. The bridge and northern half of the causeway appear intact, but there is no causeway from the bridge to the downtown Portland side. Tracks go right up to the water. Maine Narrow Gauge usually stops in this area so that its riders can get off and enjoy the view. \r

Now, in 2025, the St Lawrence & Atlantic (part of G&W) no longer runs south of Danville Jct, ME. Recently, CSX removed the diamond on the \"Lower Road\" that CSX locals and Amtrak used to slam across. I don\'t think the line is officially abandoned yet, but Maine probably will make it a rail-trail at some point.
